The General High School gives emphasis on STEM education, which helps students achieve high academic performance and develop a responsible attitude towards life, while hands-on experiential learning at the Educational Farm fosters a collective environmental awareness.

Educational Program

The General High School offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares our students for all academic pathways. Students also follow the additional experiential learning “Practical Training” at the Educational Farm, which is unique in Greece. This innovative program, based on the principles of sustainability, enhances collective environmental awareness, inspiring students to develop skills and values that promote both personal and social growth.

Our STEM program creates an engaging educational environment for our students to learn through stimulating and creative projects. Students acquire a high level of knowledge and skills in order to function effectively in a society increasingly dependent on science and technology.

Upon entering the General High School, students who wish to study at universities in the United States and meet the academic requirements, can participate in the “Study USA” program. They follow a comprehensive curriculum that includes a core course and a series of other courses in English.

STEM Program

Our STEM educational program focuses on the transition from traditional teacher-centered instruction to teaching methods which focus on inquiry-discovery learning. Students work in groups to solve authentic problems through projects using scientific methods (observation, hypothesis, experiment, theory, and conclusion). This approach enables students to acquire practical skills, develop their personal abilities and their critical thinking.

The STEM program at the General High School is implemented through:

• The innovative program of afternoon science workshops in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, where students apply theory into practice and develop their team-working skills via the experimental procedure in their effort to solve authentic problems.

• The participation of students in scientific clubs, such as astronomy, robotics, entrepreneurship, the environment, etc.

• The participation of students in science competitions, such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, EUSO (European Union Science Olympiad), Mathematics, Kangaroo (international math competition, Informatics, Robotics, etc.

• The preparation of scientific papers and participation in simulations of scientific conferences.

• Student participation in summer science schools either in Greece (Physics summer school) or at universities in the USA.

• Organization of scientific workshops, such as the International Masterclasses in Elementary Particle Physics, in cooperation with EKFE (Laboratory Science Center) and CERN.

• Various exchange programs with other EU and American schools, in which all students participate.

• The use of technology (computers, laptops, tablets, interactive whiteboards and the special software), to better understand the various phenomena and become familiar with technology.

Student & Residential Life

In addition to a full academic program, students have many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular and athletic activities on campus.  Clubs include Robotics, Entrepreneurship, Debate, PeaceJam, Cinema Club, AstroClub, Model United Nations, and many more.  We also have soccer, basketball and volleyball teams. The American Farm School participates in various organized athletic tournaments and organized competitions. Clubs and activities are designed to create a well-rounded, holistic educational experience for all students, both residential and day students.  We encourage all students to participate in these opportunities.

All students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs and travel to Europe and America. These programs helps students broaden their horizons, gain new experiences and knowledge, and improve their English language skills.

The Charles and Ann House Residence Hall consists of 60 rooms and houses students from all over Greece in double, triple and quadruple rooms.

Living in the residence halls and participating in extracurricular activities are important features of the American Farm School life.  Diversity within the student body from all areas of Greece is a key component of the AFS experience.  Through exposure to different socio-economic, cultural and educational backgrounds, students build new friendships, expand their social horizons, and increase their understanding of themselves and others.

The Student Services staff is a team of trained professionals who oversee the students’ daily program, residence hall supervision, dining facilities, and student life activities. We also have a full-time doctor and a certified nurse, who is also a trained Student Life staff member.  If necessary, students are escorted to Thermi’s Health Center or a local hospital.  Additionally, we have a School psychologist on our student support team who facilitates learning and promotes the cognitive, social, and personal development of all students, as well as their psychological well-being.  Students can meet individually with the School psychologist to manage stress/anxiety, social problems, self-esteem, or resolve conflicts.

Services

A complex support network encourages our students to challenge themselves, take initiatives and try new things in an effort to develop future leaders.  The School offers numerous extracurricular activities and academic support services.

Learning Support
The office for learning support (Arcadia program) supports students with learning difficulties through the use of alternative strategies and teaching methods.  Specially trained teachers are available to support students with their specific needs in all subject areas.

Psychological Support
The High School works closely with a child psychologist to address the specific needs of teenagers, particularly those who live on campus, including stress management, time management, separation anxiety, etc.  Meetings with the psychologist take place on a weekly basis.

Healthcare Support
A doctor’s office is located on campus and a GP is on call 24 hours a day, offering immediate medical assistance to students when required.  Students are escorted to a local hospital for medical emergencies.

Advisors
All students are assigned an advisor, whom they meet with on a regular basis.  The advisor provides guidance, assists in the adjustment to expectations of the High School and problem solving, and monitors the student’s progress through the course of their studies.

Students are transported to and from the School in the AFS school buses. Experienced drivers and attendants are responsible for the safe and timely transfer of the students to and from the High School throughout the school year.

The bus routes are studied carefully and are always designed to provide the best possible service, while ensuring the safe transportation of our students.

The American Farm School places a premium on the security of our students, staff and families. Security guards are stationed at all the entrances and exit points in order to ensure the safety of our students.

The security of the campus, including staff, students, resident students and visitors, is ensured by the Campus Security Office. The department’s personnel conduct patrols throughout the day covering all areas within the School and those surrounding the premises.

In the same vein, the High School adheres to regulations that ensure the safe transportation of our students, within or outside the school, during the school program, and during outings and field trips.
